Professor Prabha Iyengar Sridharan

Professor Prabha Iyengar Sridharan was the first female South Asian faculty member at MIT. She received a Bachelor’s in Engineering in Mechanics from the University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering in Bangalore, and then moved to the United States to pursue a PhD from the University of Minnesota, which she received in 1974. Sridharan served as Assistant Professor in the Mechanical Engineering department from 1973 to 1975.

Sridharan was amongst the earlier South Asian women at MIT to settle permanently in the US and her household became a home for new immigrants from India who arrived in MIT in the 1970s and 80s.
